The Routledge Handbook of Youth Physical Activity

A new textbook for studying youth physical activity

In the spring of 2018 Tim Brusseau asked me and Dave Lubans whether we would join him as editors of a new book  focused on youth physical activity. Large book projects like this are very time-consuming but we all agreed that a comprehensive overview of the topic was currently missing, and that a resource like this would be very valuable for the youth physical activity academic community. Two years later in April 2020 the book was published!

Its 38 chapters cover sections related to the concept and surveillance of physical activity, the benefits of physical activity, factors associated with physical activity, physical activity measurement, fitness  and motor skill, interventions in school, community, and family contexts, and the role of motor skill, fitness and structured exercise.

We are obviously very pleased and proud of the finished product and are of course indebted to the contributions of the individual chapter authors. We hope that it becomes the ‘go-to’ resource in our field and is readily available in university libraries. The book is published by Routledge and the table of contents can be viewed here.
